Back when I was just a Master Thaumaturge, at some level beyond 45, but not yet 50, I was told of a place by a stranger where gold was sure to be bountiful: "the Coven." Masking my ignorance, I began walking through the Commons asking if anyone wanted to join for "the best farming instance." Honestly, I had absolutely no idea where the Coven was, or even what they looked like. In fact, I was hoping to meet a more experienced player who would show me the way when we grouped.
Instead, I met Scarlet Deathblood, who was around the same level, wearing optimal Bazaar armor (Lv 40) like I was; she was the first to chime in with a Tell-back. Luckily for our group, she had access to the instance, so while I didn't learn where to find the birds (instead, we all teleported to her), I got to see their crooked, old beaks in person. After a couple of runs, we got to replace our current gear with the drops, and from that day forth, we became inseparable friends.
I later learned that "Missy" was her name, and I revealed that mine was consistent with Battleblood's. We quested together, finished missions at the same time, beat Malistaire, and achieved our first Briskbreeze success together, in a 3-man. The most memorable and significant activity, which reflects the strength of our bond, was farming for each other's 100-damage class swords. The farms lasted from 2 to 4 hours daily, until we got our corresponding weapon. Neither of us gave up on each other, or felt hesitant to continue pursuing the other person's item. You can pretty much call Missy and me "siblings."
The friendship grew to a point where one of us could say anything to or about the other person, and we would not feel offended. For example, Missy has a close relative who is constantly suffering, whether or not they are receiving treatment. On the night that I found out about this, I asked her, "So why are they still around?" I know, this sounds like a cold question, especially when that person is someone she loves. But, without hesitation or negative reaction, she answered me sincerely, "I don't know. I don't want him to go, but it hurts to see him like this. I really don't know why he wants to do this, either." Our insight and comments to and about one another do not feel like slaps in the face, but rather they are window openings, giving us the opportunity to visit a new perspective, or escape from annoyance or grief. We challenge each other intellectually and emotionally.
When the depth and complexity of our conversations flourished, each of us revealed a dark secret to one another. We both initially feared that our skeletons in the closet would compromise the friendship, but we had more than enough faith in the bond, and trusted one another.
Missy's secret definitely topped mine...in fact, I couldn't even imagine that I'd meet such a person in Wizard101, let alone with that personality of hers! Don't worry, it wasn't anything horrifically serious, nor did she harm anyone, but it would definitely stir a stranger's outlook on her. My mind began questioning about the friendship, whether we should still be in one another's company or separate ways.
Usually when humans are presented with situations or cases so unusual or extreme, we can't help but stereotype or draw upon cliches to find a personal solution or answer. A general example is like my experience: finding out that Missy did something that the majority of us would look down on. Those quickest to judge would already associate her with a negative essence, based on the proposed idea that she had done something unacceptable to most. Already, extreme cases flood the minds of some. "She did A. Or B. Or X. She cannot be trusted."
How did I react? At first, I was a bit thrown off, and certainly questions about trust ran through my head, but I did not conclude that we could no longer be friends, nor did I hold any conditions against her, such as, "I'll play with you, but let's never bring the subject up again," or "Give me time to think about it." I didn't know the whole story at the time, but I didn't have to.
As humans, we have that gift of learning from experiences and developing insight on those events. The consequences, results, and effects of our actions play the major role in who we become in the future, not the acts themselves. Certainly, what we did is part of our past and our identity (i.e. "a former ____"), but whoever we are in the present has branched off from the subsequent timeline of our life, rather than from a single point. We become influenced, either through enlightenment/realization or passion/indulgence. How we act upon and after that is what really matters.
I never thought about this before, but it solidifies the point: I always felt it odd that an animal was euthanized when it unknowingly violated a human's basic right to life, which is something impossible for it to comprehend. Instead of receiving "life" in a cage, it's put to sleep, without the justification that it acted on instinct. It becomes forever categorized as "dangerous," and "unfit" to live among us. I wonder if it's the mindset of "once a killer, always a killer" that brings that judgment. Or, if we assume the animal doesn't have the capacity to learn or recognize "right" vs. "wrong," it is then exempt from second chances.
Thus, those around us should be treated as humans, and not quickly condemned for something that happened long ago. We all have the capability to mature or better ourselves, unlike animals. Treat them as the friend you know them as, regardless of what you discover about them, because that's the person you became friends with; not the mistaken or misguided individual they used to be. Your friendship could also provide for them a support system they lacked in the past. Or, the friendship was possible between you both due to some proactive, positive and healthy decisions made by that person; they grew into being that person you now like. Going back to the "intro" post, the man may have lost someone truly special, due to negatively associating them with their history. Perhaps his partner has changed her way of life and agrees with his views now...it's a shame he never found out.
Missy, to me, is pretty much the personification of the Bartleby (Rebirth) spell. She did a complete 180 on her life, and I'm proud and honored to get to know her, let alone meet her. Cheryl and Ronan have expressed more than once that they also feel the same.
True, there are some extremities where certain actions cannot be forgiven or disregarded. In the case when someone wasn't hurt in the short or long run, however, we should think twice before giving up on a connection.
What do you guys think? Have you ever had a situation like this, and if so, what did you do?

BUN: One Week...
(sung to Barenaked Ladies' "One Week")
Blog:
Blog:
"It's been one week since you wrote on me,
Five days since you sat with me saying
'Too much to do, I'll come back when ready.'
Three days on the Twitter Feed
I realized I wasn't there, it's just the P. P.
Yesterday you looked at me
But it'll still be two days 'til you say you're 'ready.'"
Kevin:
Hold on now, don't have a brown cow,
I know it's been a while,
You'll think you're being so neglected
I brought you news to diffuse, although I would rather choose
To write it out
In a way that's much more completed:
In the paragraph form like the good times,
Share what's on my mind,
Because I'm all for the readers.
But because you do insist,
Here's a real big list; don't get fined for being a speeder:
Opened site at night and 'twas alright;
Not as popular as "Twilight";
I like PBworks, it's the finest of the Wiki's,
Gotta check us out, and you'll be "wow"-ed
How well-endowed we're with the crowd
Of bustling Petnome Pages,
You would think that we're kinda geeky.
How can we help it if we've got a lot o' Pets to board?
Tryin' hard to keep up and update it more...
We're the kind of Team bent on aiding Wizards all.
Can't understand why we do?
It's just natural.
I have a new member to introduce on the Team!
I have here Sierra Starsong and here's her blog--"
"Still, been one week since you hung with me
Even Mistblood's slowed down; I'm getting worried.
Five days 'til it's Saturday
Five days 'til it's Saturday
You've got until then for a new release (*hint hint*)
Been three days since your tooth's removed,
You distracted yourself in arena; many got schooled.
Yesterday you came to see me
And now I sit back and wait 'til you say 'I'm ready.'"
"Saturday morning, the Warehouse run was
Delayed way past one; my late nap a faux pas;
Though it actually turned out okay:
Took L.R. Jonte
With Lifecaster and Deathslinger.
Like a bulldozer we pushed right on through
Like nothing was new
Like "that," Estrakir popped and died.
Then soon right after, farmed Kensington,
With good John Lifeglen
Who hosts All-Star Meet-and-Greet this Thursday night.
Gonna get a set o' Petno' mail
Gonna search on through the clustered trail
Just so the info' isn't always giving you the wrong things;
Gotta use the pics and edit tricks
'Cause the website has got 2 GIG storage space;
Hopefully very soon we'll finish uploading.

We are proud to present that we've got the Crabling.
Now looking to map other pets...
And all last week I was busy, see...
Farming fast, crafting snacks, playin' with Missy.
Five days since I looked on through
Three days since the weekend came
Time flew fast and now we're back, feelin' blue.
Yesterday, shared some strategies

BUN: Celestia "Prequests" and Game Updates on Live Realm
Now that the "Gone Fishing" sign is off the door, save for KI's response, it's time to share some thoughts and occurrences! The past few days have been great enough to overshadow the few disappointments I had here and there regarding the game, such as Warehouse being stripped as a requirement for players to access Celestia and the second "Item Hurricane" within a few weeks.
On Wednesday, my long-gone, pioneer best friend Missy, a.k.a. Scarlet Deathblood, whom I mentioned a long time ago and made a "tribute" video for, has finally returned. We reunited in Unicorn Way, where she was given her return present of Swiftshadow Wings. Over the weekend, I did my best to explain the new Pet System and expectations to have for the coming of Celestia. We have been questing around together to help her towards her second Grandmaster (and my third), both of the same school! I'll update you guys when we're finally in Dragonspyre, but just for kicks and giggles, here's an interesting fact: my character has yet to finish the Lady Blackhope quest. At level 34.
On the same day, I managed to finish my third Epic pet: Duke Honey, the 2G (second generation) Magma Colossus. Check out what he got after hitting the 1000 XP mark:
These are his parents:
And this is him, in his entirety:
The Defender Pig had a max Universal Resist of 10%. This guy has 11%, plus 5% Power Pip boost. Durable and Tenacious were both needed to achieve the new limit.
Speaking of pets, I would like everyone to please welcome both Kestrel Shadowthistle from the Shadowthistle School of Wizardry and Heather Emeraldflame of Heather Emeraldflame & Friends...to the Petnome Team! Kestrel will be helping extensively with the internal stuff, like data and site management, while Heather will be out on the field, collecting resources that we do not have available (like pictures of pets, etc.). A round of applause to Heather, who has been more than kind to raise around a hundred of her pets to Teen to add to the database! So, yes, we now have two Heathers on the Petnome Team!
---
On Thursday, Cassandra Hexthorn of A Life of Fire and Fallon Deathslinger helped me with collecting the rest of my ingredients for that mammoth Grizzleheim craft: The Watchtower Hall.
The front page of the login screen revealed that Updates were coming that night...with the news that the Warehouse was not required to access Celestia. A frown inducer for many of us (9 to 6 vote, in favor of keeping the instance as a requirement) across Twitter and Facebook, but there lies the limitation of communication for Menu Chatters, who deserve as much as we Closed and Open Chatters do when it comes to traveling to the new world.
---
On the night of the update, Friday, I had a lingering thought about Earthquake's change to take off Spirit Armors created by Rebirth: what about Steal Ward? For those that don't know, Steal Ward does not work on Rebirth armor...I wonder if that will change sometime soon?
I noticed that Pet Abilities have also been updated. Originally, we were planning to release the Petnome results around this weekend, but the game changes put that progression to a halt. We are currently working on overcoming that issue, however :)
I emailed Professor Greyrose to see if it was possible for a changelog to go public or sent directly to us whenever Pet skills were changed...but her reply indicated that it was up to us...the Community and "loyal contributors"...to create a reliable fansite. We'll need everyone's help more than ever!
Back into the game: I lost Platae, my Tiger mount. But the highlight of that night: beating Warehouse with two Death and Ice: Gabriel Heart (Ronan Dawn), Missy, and me.
---
On Saturday, I finally got the recipe for the House after grinding in the Coven den. Then came a major Warehouse marathon as I powerhoused through the instance with the entire cast of Wandcast (Dustin, David, and Kestrel), my "employer" Leesha Darkheart, both of my Petnome teammates with the first name "Heather," and Scarlet Moonflower, and many others (I'm sorry if I forgot!!) with my good friend of a friend, "Taryn." No losses or defeats to report yet, but the runs were pretty formulaic, to be fair.
---
On Sunday, I mated Duke Honey with his predecessor, Rusty. That's right. Cross-generational breeding. I hope there are no negative repercussions to this ( >_< ). My intent was to use a Stat-filled pet (Rusty) and combine that with a pet with desirable skills (Duke Honey, with his resist and power pip), to create a child with even more resist and power pip potential (Mister Ruby). I ended up with a Magma Colossus 62 (the first Generation is 61), meaning Mister Ruby took on more Ultra-Rare or Epic abilities compared to his father-grandfather. (Oh lord, I am shivering now). And, he has an Epic talent that Rusty didn't have (meaning Spell-Proof, the resist, was inherited). Now I am hoping that actually manifests!
In the same day, I received a really great gift from Alric Ravensinger from The Raven's Vault:
That's my trusty Ice Bird, Duke Piper, showing off his wings next to me. Nice work and thank you, Alric!
On my unconventional leveling method, I learned that you can collect both "book quests" from Marleybone and Mooshu, and actually complete them at the same time (reading "Return of the Emperor" from the Jade Palace means you also read "Marleybonian Civil War"; reading "A New Beginning" also completes "The Golden Age"). I wonder if that'll be fixed soon...
---
Then yesterday, not too much went on other than chatting with friends while I waited for my crafting slots to open for my new Watchtower Hall!
I loved the way the interface counted down while the ingredients were consumed!

The Power of Friendship
Around last night, I sent out an email to the hosts of Ravenwood Radio, expressing praise for them and my perception about their influences as players and as drivers of the show. While writing, part of my subconscious clicked off in my head, opening an unseen window that I failed to recognize in all of my years with online multiplayers. The result was the following phrase that I shared with them: "It has always been our peers, and not necessarily the creators [of the game], who keep us coming back for more..."
This is all too familiar to me, especially with the temporary but arbitrary loss of an in-game friend. By that, I mean there will be a time when Scarlet Deathblood (real first name: Missy) returns, but with her circumstances, there is no telling or reasonable estimate of when she'd be back. But after I heard the very first and last voicemail from her ever since the beginning of February 2010, the mild euphoria and excitement I once had for Wizard101 seemed to dissipate for the following weeks.
I started playing back in early December 2009, so I admit I am moderately new; however, with a really great mentor (Ronan Dawn), I've been caught up on the history and mechanics of the game in the sense that I understand that KingsIsle has had some loss of a fan base due to infringement on their promise to keep Dragonblades for Beta testers, and that old, imbalanced Crown armor was available in the past. Anyway, having played for two full months before Missy was dragged away, there was still a vast area of Wizard101 that I had yet to touch on. I initially expected that with all the content that was unexplored, that I could carry on and venture normally.
I was more than wrong. A few days after her forced disappearance, the daily tasks of checking for game updates, logging on, and even refilling potions began to feel like unnecessary chores. I remember sitting still in my chair one night, not even touching the keyboard or mouse, looking at my poorly dressed Thaumaturge, and slowly surveyed his surroundings, wondering what I was still doing here. I had lost a close companion and partner. When someone farms with you without limit, hesitation, regret, or wavering patience for as long as you have faith in the next farm's results, they become like an extended sibling, if not best friend. Even the updates that brought us the Wing Mounts and Crown Armor Sets could not shake as much enthusiasm as I would have liked back into me.
So what kept me here? I think we'll have to rephrase that question and replace "what" to "who". And it wasn't just one person, but it was a number of significant people whom Scarlet and I knew mutually or that I knew exclusively. Cheryl Fire, Ronan Dawn, Allan Spiritrider, Eric Frostwalker, Ronan Storyglade, Iridian Stormweaver, just to name the few and great. Had I not had these great friends, it honestly wouldn't have mattered if Celestia was released as early as March. When there is no one close to you to share the excitement you get when finding the loot you pursued endlessly, or wallow in necessary silence after a loss (like a global reset), these multiplayer games become just a visual embodiment of a rowdy chatroom, and not necessarily a "great game" anymore. Don't get me wrong; KingsIsle's work is truly a masterpiece, but without people you can play with and trust and have fun with, you're better off with getting Fallout 3 and an Xbox for a one-time pay-to-play deal.
This thought will be expanded into a broader area in the next post: "The Power of the Community." So until then, share your thoughts, comments, experiences, and/or questions on the importance of in-game friendship to you.
